Mobile Blackjack Basics
To start out with, after you’ve placed your bets you and the dealer are dealt 2 cards. You can’t do anything about what those cards are, but you can make inferences about them and decide what to do. Royal cards are worth 10, number cards are worth their pip value and Aces are worth 11 or 1, depending on what works best with the rest of the hand.
The objective of the game is always to get a hand total of 21, or as near to that as you can without going any higher, and while beating the dealer hand at the same time. This is why the game is often also called Twenty-One. If you get 21 on the first 2 cards, with a face and an ace combination, it is known as a Natural Blackjack and you win the game immediately.
You can see your 2 cards and 1 of the dealer’s cards, and in the American versions of the game the dealer often “peeks for Blackjack”. This means that if the face-up card is a royal card or an Ace, meaning it is 1 half of a Natural Blackjack, the dealer’s face-down card is checked. If you don’t get a Natural Blackjack there are various moves you can make, as you try to improve your hand. These vary between games, but usually include the following options:
- Hit: get dealt an extra card
- Double Down: Get dealt an extra card and double your bet
- Split: If you have a pair of same-value cards, you can Split your hand into 2 new hands. Each new hand then gets dealt another card
- Stand: When you are happy with what you’re holding, Stand and end your turn
If the dealer has Blackjack you are prevented from placing any further bets and losing any more money, and you may even be able to take out insurance against this scenario so that you do at least walk away with some winnings. This isn’t possible in European variations of Twenty-One.
Payouts for Mobile Blackjack
At the end of the round, all Blackjack hands are revealed. You win if you get a Natural Blackjack, of course, with an incredible 3:2 payout. If this is not the case, you’ll get a 1:1 payout if your hand total is higher than the dealer’s total but less than 21, or if your total is less than 21 but the dealer’s total is more than 21.
